Bright lights and big dreams came to life during the 22nd Annual Wish Ball last Saturday. More than 700 guests filed into Chicago’s Union Station – and not to take a train. The space was transformed into an area ripe for bidding, eating, drinking and dancing. Honorary Chair Mike Ditka, former head coach of the Chicago Bears, was on hand to greet guests and show his support for the Foundation. Also on the scene were six “Wish Kids,” sporting big smiles and their Sunday best.

Before the seated dinner, guests perused the silent auction items while making their way through a mini Taste of Chicago, sampling bites from the Park Grill, cibomatto, Blue 13, La Madia, Morton’s and Mike Ditka’s. Emceed by Peggy Kusinski of NBC 5 Chicago, the night included a special show by performers from The Second City and Barack Obama – um, that would be our very own Street Teamer Reggie Brown!

The live auction raised some serious cash for the Foundation with enticing items such as a private dinner party at the winner’s home, prepared by Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard ($10,000) and an opportunity to race a Ferrari 355 Challenge race car ($12,550). At the end of the evening, guests enjoyed dancing to the Bluz Brothers Band and sampling sweets from a dessert table donated by the Affina Hotel.

Proceeds from Wish Ball 2009 will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois, helping to grant nearly 150 of the 700 wishes the Foundation will give this year to Illinois children facing life-threatening medical conditions. This event is made possible by support from generous sponsors, including sponsor GATX Corporation and Platinum Sponsors Baxter, Macy’s, PotashCorp and Unum. Since being founded in Illinois in 1985, the Foundation has granted more than 8,000 wishes. For more information, visit  www.wishes.org or call 312.602.WISH.

Over the course of the last year ‘change’ has been on the tongues and minds of everyone in America. Right now in the spirit of the holiday season there’s an amazing way for you to help change lives across the world and help educate the people of southern Sudan. This time we’re talking about pocket change. Tomorrow, December 14 is the designated 24 hour donation day for PACODES’ library development project.

The goal is to raise $100,000, this may seem like a lot of money but they’re only asking each person to donate $1. Of course $1 is the minimum donation requested but you are asked to be as generous as possible. The great thing about this fundraiser is that it’s relying on the power of word and the concept of strength in numbers. If the word reaches 100,000 people and they all donate, the goal is attained and you played a vital part in enriching and educating someone who would not normally have that opportunity.  Tell everyone, your coworkers, friends, family, the barista at Starbucks, the teller at the bank, anyone you come in contact with.

PACODES is a nonprofit organization that  is determined to provide the people of the war and genocide torn Payijar region in Southern Sudan with a habitable and sustainable lifestyle. Right now, the focus of PACODES is building a library  to help provide education and spread literacy to a part of the world that desperately needs it, a place where children actually want to go to school. This particular project has been underway for quite some time now and is still in the fundraising stage.   With the combined efforts of the you, the supporters of  PACODES and the rest of the world, we have the ability to supply a war torn and impoverished region of the world with the simple basic tools they need to provide education and empowerment for their people.

Summer is right around the corner and many of us are working overtime on our fitness to get our beach bods back. In the midst of all the resistance training, classes and limitless other cardio activities, the one action that is commonly overlooked is one of the easiest and most rewarding parts of the workout, stretching. Don’t despair, there is hope for us all, a newly banded troupe of unrelenting rogue stretchers out there dedicated to keep Chicago limber and active “Stretching you out anytime, anywhere”.  Introducing Stretch Out Chicago, the crew is made up of five members (Pictured L to R) Michael Cullinlane aka Gumbo, Lindsay Stryffeler aka Spaghetti-Oh,”The Queen of Stretch” Betsy Stover aka B.L.T, Jamie Nagle aka Meatbox and Jeff Bruce aka Dr. Stretch.

I caught up with the crew at the new River West vintage lifestyle store,Dovetail while filming their mockumentary set to hit YouTube later this month.  Their obsession began over a year and a half ago, while a few of the members were at a concert bopping around enjoying the “Non danceable music” they began to stretch it out to ease lower back pain and keep the blood circulating, somewhere during that process the seeds for Stretch Out Chicago were planted. Fast forward to present day, outfitted mostly in American Apparel attire, this fun loving troupe combines their passion for fitness, comedy and social interaction to “Stretch the love across Chicago”.

With personalities as extreme and diverse as their wardrobe, Stretch Out Chicago provides a fun, therepuetic and memorable experience everwhere they go.  While  you might assume their expertise lies solely in the realms of health and fitness, the crew’s careers cover a wide range from pharmecuetical sales to teaching high school english.   With the mindset of acting locally and thinking globally, the crew plans on expanding their mission to “Stretch out Chicago, the United States and the world” striving for a total worldwide stretch domination.

You can catch up with Stretch Out Chicago for their Stretch and Release Party June 20 from 6-8 PM at Dovetail, 1432 W Chicago Ave for the launch of their video and look forward to an entertaining evening of cocktails, autographed pictures and of course, stretching.  Keep an eye out this summer for the team while they continue to sir things up  “Spreading the stretch love across Chicago”.
