If you think  a “hair war” is waking up with a killer case of bed head then think again. Starting back in 2001, Hair Wars is the ultimate salon competition where local salons have the opportunity to showcase their artistic best in a model meets catwalk showdown. The top three salons from each region are invited to battle for the title of “supreme salon” in a national competition at Wasted Space in Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel.

The most recent Hair Wars competition took place on March 15th at Rednofive – but don’t go on tearing your hair out because you missed it. Rednofive is pleased to host the eighth annual Hair Wars DVD Relase Party this Sunday, which includes an awards ceremony acknowledging the top three salons. BRAVO’s Shear Genius finalist Ben Mollin will host the evening’s festivities.hairwars

Get there at 9 p.m. to enjoy the Belvedere Vodka cocktail reception and have your photo taken by locally famous fashion photographer Goykphoto, as well as as a live airbrush makeup demo by Airbrush Academy. Famed fashion photographer David Anthony will also display photos from a recent shoot of all the winners.  At 11 p.m., URSupermodels will display the avant garde creations from the top three salons. The winners, Hairborn Fashions, Bang Salon and Ambra European Salon and Spa, will advance to the national competition in Vegas in the fall.

No need to RSVP,  just show up at Rednofive (440 North Halsted) at 9 p.m. – that is, unless you have to wash your hair.

Chicago was haute with wannabe local fashion designers lined up outside Joe’s Bar (940 W. Weed St.) on Thursday to see if they were “fierce” enough to qualify for a new yet-to-be named reality fashion show on Bravo.

Let’s hope Chicago wasn’t a “hot tranny mess.”

You know, one of my recent posts prompted someone to suggest that I “find something better to do” other than “obsess about being gay“. Not one to overlook expressions of sincere concern from our readers, I decided to think of something better to do with my time. For inspiration I looked deep in the mirror to see if there was something more meaningful I could do, like a good tweeze, a shave or a pluck. But alas, perfection had already beaten me to my face. Frustrated by my fulfilled potential, I decided to pick up something to read. But flicking through the last issue of “How Big Is It?” I realized that I had already read all the ads cover to centerfold. So lastly, I popped a DVD in the player to see if any of the dialogue in “The Thai Ladyboy” would inspire me, but alas, nothing new.

Which is fine, because a place I know where I’ll find a truly great cause is the 16th Annual Hall of Fame Celebrity Auction, to be held at Sidetrack on Tuesday, September 23rd at 7pm. The auction benefits the 2008 Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame induction ceremony. For those of you who don’t know what that is, think of it like any regular Hall of Fame induction ceremony, only with a fog machine and strobe lights. The event is sponsored by Boi Magazine, Circuit Night Club, Firefly, J&L Catering, Ketel One Vodka, Miller Lite, Sidetrack, and supergurl images. And should this not qualify as “something better to do” with my time, perhaps I will simply go home and look for something less gay on television. Surely Bravo has a new show.
