While we’re all about the lazy days of summer, who says you can’t throw a little bit of a cerebral flare into the mix? Apparently, the stellar blowout between Joan Rivers and Patti Duke on the Celebrity Apprentice (you’re a po-ka playa) didn’t discourage everyone from learning the tricks of the trade. Citizen Bar’s Poker School 101 started out as a ladies only event, but due to the high demand,  men are now invited to participate in  a little healthy competition. NBC-poker

Citizen Bar owner Jimmy D, professional poker player and Millionaire Matchmaker star, along with additional professional poker players will provide students with a comprehensive guide of poker tips and strategies. Starting tonight, Poker 101 will be held every other Tuesday (rain or shine) from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Lessons are free and winners will have their picture displayed on Citizen Bar’s “Wall of Fame.” Students can take advantage of special food and drink specials like half price bottles of wine and $6 salads (think swimsuit season), while soaking up the summer sun on the roof-top deck.

Space is limited, reservations are recommended. Please RSVP to ieva@citizenbar.com

If you think  a “hair war” is waking up with a killer case of bed head then think again. Starting back in 2001, Hair Wars is the ultimate salon competition where local salons have the opportunity to showcase their artistic best in a model meets catwalk showdown. The top three salons from each region are invited to battle for the title of “supreme salon” in a national competition at Wasted Space in Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel.

The most recent Hair Wars competition took place on March 15th at Rednofive – but don’t go on tearing your hair out because you missed it. Rednofive is pleased to host the eighth annual Hair Wars DVD Relase Party this Sunday, which includes an awards ceremony acknowledging the top three salons. BRAVO’s Shear Genius finalist Ben Mollin will host the evening’s festivities.hairwars

Get there at 9 p.m. to enjoy the Belvedere Vodka cocktail reception and have your photo taken by locally famous fashion photographer Goykphoto, as well as as a live airbrush makeup demo by Airbrush Academy. Famed fashion photographer David Anthony will also display photos from a recent shoot of all the winners.  At 11 p.m., URSupermodels will display the avant garde creations from the top three salons. The winners, Hairborn Fashions, Bang Salon and Ambra European Salon and Spa, will advance to the national competition in Vegas in the fall.

No need to RSVP,  just show up at Rednofive (440 North Halsted) at 9 p.m. – that is, unless you have to wash your hair.

It’s officially here. Thrillist Chicago. It’s a free daily email and they only cover what they like. Why waste your time with NOT fun stuff (ie: bad reviews) is their logical position. The magazine is targeted at “guys like us” says co-founder Ben Lerer, and I think it has kickin’ stuff for everyone.

Dave, the local editor for Chicago does a great job of finding cool things to do and write about. I didn’t say that these things are all necessarily reasonable priced, but definitely cool. (I haven’t stopped thinking about this bronze appliqué holster that was featured a few weeks back by Skin.Graft. )

The party was a ton of fun and everyone was wonderfully nice. The 50/50 is an awesome bar and did a phenomenal job of hosting us. They have an amazing staff, good music and nice clean restrooms. (We love that, don’t we, Ladies?) Therefore, I say, the launch was a huge success with music, an open bar, Jet Blue giveaways and more.

Sheesh… It’s a dirty job…

If you want to get in the loop with Thrillist Chicago, you may join here.
