It was an event that captured the attention of the entire country. An image that many thought was the Virgin Mary — and other, a salt stain — appeared under the Fullerton Avenue overpass, prompting hundreds of people to visit the shrine for days on end.

The event provides the inspiration for Teatro Vista’s latest production, Our Lady of the Underpass. The play is currently on-stage at the Victory Gardens Greenhouse through March 29.

The play, written by Tanya Saracho, is a story about men and women from all walks of life who are brought together through the real-life event.

It can be tempting to just hunker down and hibernate during Chicago’s cruel winter. But to avoid the inevitable cabin fever, how about a compromise — hit those places closest to home. You’ll be supporting your local businesses, while running (slightly) less of a risk of falling down by not covering as much frozen ground. In just my Lakeview ‘hood, there’s tons of options. Although the relaxing back patios are uninhabitable this time of year, Duke of Perth, El Nuevo Mexicano, and La Creperie are classic favorites.

Snow Days Chicago

Theresa Carter, The Local Tourist, NBC Chicago Street Team

Do you have a heart of ice? Thaw it out for Valentine’s Day at Snow Days Chicago. From February 12 – 16 this five-day festival turns Grant Park into a winter wonderland.

This isn’t your typical hot chocolates and horse-drawn sleighs winter festival, but it will warm your heart. For instance, huskies are fur-balls of love, and did you know there are dog sledding teams in the Chicago area? Green Valley Dog Drivers has four mushing locations near Naperville. They’re bringing their team to Snow Days and will be performing dog sled demonstrations each day. The best part? You can pet the dogs when they’re done! If you’d like to see them ahead of time they’ll be at Brookfield Zoo on January 25.

As if seeing a team of huskies pulling sleds in Grant Park isn’t enough to get your heart racing, there will also be snowboarders. In downtown Chicago. A full size rail and ramp will be set up and a team from Raging Buffalo Snowboard Ski Park will be demonstrating, and they’ll be competing on Saturday.

Artists speak from the heart, and many from the Midwest and a team from Mexico will be creating sculptures from snow. They’ll begin their works of art on Wednesday and a winner will be awarded on Saturday at 3pm. You can see where the teams are from and their proposed sculptures here.

Children always have hearts of gold, but even they’ll need to warm up for awhile. There’s a tent with a storytelling corner and kids can take home crafts they’ve made. Each day features a different theme, like Valentine’s Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, President’s Day, Black History Month and Winter.

It may be a month away, but I can already feel the love.

Okay, so let’s face it, you and I have much more in common than we realize. For one thing, we both go to NBCChicago to get our news and learn of the latest happenings around the city of Chicago. Secondly, we both wake up every January morning wondering why we’re not tuning in to NBCMiami instead. We both agree that when people tell each other “go to Hell”, Chicago Winter is what they have in mind. Like me, you are a strong believer that winter is the invention of an ugly angel who did not want people looking cute. And both you and I agree that if we hear one more sadist say “It’s not that bad” the population count in Chicago will have just decreased by one.

Oh, and neither one of us has a ticket for the Obama inauguration. Face it. And don’t lie about it, saying that you could have scored one but had a very important meeting with a client that day. Like me, you have no clients. So there.

Which is fine. Because a great place to catch the inauguration is Wild Pug. The new gay bar in the up-and-coming Uptown is hosting a fiesta to benefit the Illinois Safe School Alliance. The Alliance is dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment for LGBT youth around the city. Given the historic nature of the event, it only makes sense that the place to be that night is an event that celebrates difference and acceptance, both of which have propelled Chicago’s very own Barack Obama to presidency. So put on your favorite pair of snow boots, your most cherished parka, your most flattering pair of long underwear, and join in on the fun!

Ok, so maybe I am slightly biased (since Sarah is such a good friend of mine) but when Chicago Magazine recently listed her as one of the top five nightlifers to watch in Chicago, I knew that my successful friend was getting the acknowledgment that she richly deserves!

We started out, Friday night, at Crimson Lounge where Sarah and team will relaunch Maven‘s Diva Series. After we had our fill of “Girl Talk” Sarah led us over to Underground where we danced, laughed and partied the night away! Benjamin Newby, manager and good friend of Sarah’s, made sure that we all had a great time!

Congratulations, Sarah! You deserve it!

PS: We’ll definitely be watching YOU!

Much to my delight and surprise, I found myself to be the current “Featured NBC Chicago Street Teamer”! After such an exciting, bustling and fantastic Chicago Holiday season, I feel as though the gifts just keep on coming!

I also realized that in the midst of all the excitement, there were TWO holiday videos that I never actually posted on this site. I know, I know… and I’m sorry. Please forgive Santa.

Due to the “Santa-Clause-y” nature of the videos, I wondered if the time had passed and it was too late to post… BUT THEN I thought, “What would Santa do?”

So, “bada-bing, bada-boom”… here you go. Please enjoy Santa dancing at the Go Green event and ice skating in Millennium Park.

Even a hard core Chicagoan would be forgiven if they weren’t thinking about warmer destinations this time of year.

If you can’t swing the plane ticket south, Nacional 27 might have the next best thing.

Every Friday night, the restaurant transforms into a sexy South Beach nightclub with sultry signature cocktails, Miami fashion week footage and dynamic beats performed by special guest DJs and live percussionists.
