One of the best things about Chicago is the countless numbers of great places to eat. But that blessing can also be a curse. New eateries open up weekly, and it can be difficult to keep up.
I meant to check out Powerhouse Restaurant and Bar when it opened to some positive buzz last year, but for some reason it fell off my radar. That is until last night.

Powerhouse is a 9,000 square foot restaurant located inside an old power company facility near the intersection of Clinton and Lake in the Fulton River District.
The owner, Jimmy Alexander, is a veteran of the Chicago dining scene, having owned Pegasus Restaurant in Greektown for 15 years before trying his hand at an upscale steakhouse type of eatery. Needless to say, the word “Powerhouse” is appropriate when it came to the food. Our server was more than helpful when it came to the wine list, and when we didn’t order what he suggested, he brought out samples for us try — leading to a wonderful experience with the lemon risotto on the appetizer menu and the sweet potato doughnuts for dessert. The entrees were a nice mix of heavier fare (Prime Ribeye, Rack of Wild Boar), to lighter fish dishes such as the Wild Alaskan Palin — I mean Halibut — and the Walleye-Pike. I was also impressed with the creative side dishes, which played a starring role here instead of simply sidekick status.
When you’re finished eating in one of the two posh dining rooms, grab a drink in the bar area, which offers a separate casual menu that serves food until 1 a.m. Monday through Saturdays. You’ve got the power. Now use it.
