(9/12 Update: I learned Oprah opened her season in NYC in honor of the 9/11 victims…she’s covering that today)
I’m an Oprah fan. So I stayed up last night and watched the 11:05 pm airing of The Oprah Show.
I didn’t really mind that she opened her season in New York City, but I was disappointed by not just the format of the show, but the way she kept talking about how great New Yorkers are. Hey, in all respect, if she’s hosting a show there, she should give her audience praise, but I can’t help it. I felt slighted during the show. Oprah got her start in Chicago, why not open the season here? Then it made sense. David Letterman.
Oprah finally had Dave on her show, which was a great coup, but from a viewer standpoint, it was painful to watch. I already know about the Oprah Log Dave kept. I already saw the Superbowl spot Oprah and Dave filmed. These reels were used for ‘filler’ while Oprah and Dave chatted. I also know all about Dave’s heart surgery, along with him being an older father.
This was the SEASON opener of The Oprah Winfrey Show?
Next, Lisa Marie Presley sang a duet with her father, Elvis. How does this tie into the show about Dave? Lisa’s daughter, Riley, joined her mom on stage and chatted with Oprah. How does this even fit into the NYC theme?
Oprah, you plain rock, but at least Ellen shows off NYC and does things in NYC when she tapes her show from NYC. Having Dave on the show makes sense, but Lisa Marie and her daughter, too? I know most of your hour-long same format shows don’t exist as much as they used to, but if the producers can tie in the content, that’d be great.
Now come back home to the city that started your syndication career. We miss you.
